Provision of services through feasible self help
solutions becomes a major portion of Taraqees' efforts for sustainable
development in Balochistan. Services are being provided under three
major thematic areas which also form the Foundations' core programs.
These are:
1. Poverty Alleviation
through Micro Finance & Enterprise Development Program,
2.
Building physical infrastructure through Community Physical Infrastructure
program,
3. Primary health care
promotion and awareness through Basic Health Education & Services
Program.
4. Capacity building at
various levels through Human & Institutional Development section,
5. Strengthening PTCs
(Parent Teacher Committees) and provision of literacy through education
program.
6. Addressing children’s
needs through innovative and need based services,
Service delivery efforts are to be complimented with strong and sustained
advocacy for policy shift. A decisive socio-economic change in Balochistan
calls for a facilitative socio-cultural and policy environment especially
because the efforts for development in the province are hemmed in by
an exploitive and male-dominated tribal system. Though the tribal system
has lost some of its historical leverage, it continues to have a social
and economic hold over the population of rural Balochistan. The tribal
leaders tend to see the emancipation of people, with a focus on women,
a threat to their hegemony. Low literacy rates entail lack of awareness
among the masses about development issues. Additionally, despite some
positive changes in public policies, the government is yet to give social
development the due priority.
